ABOUT THE CREATIVE

Baeley Amalfi is an Italian-Australian screen writer and director based in Perth, making projects that often blend Australian realism with whimsical magical realism. He wrote the screenplay for CinefestOz 2021 selected short CADET while studying, before directing THE BIRDS which premiered at WA Made Film Festival in 2022.

In 2025, Baeley directed the documentary short film THIRD SPACE, a painterly observational film set inside a lonely town hall at the end of summer, which premiered at the Revelations Perth International Film Festival. The following year Baeley was selected as a LEADING LIGHT winner at the Australian International Documentary Conference, recognising new and exciting voices in Australian documentary. He is currently in late development for his debut hybrid documentary NIGHT PARROT, a mix of fiction and observational exploration of WA's eccentric birding community, and the odd mythology behind Australia's most elusive and controversal bird.

Baeley had a unique entry to the industry as a location scout, archivist, and documentary photographer. In 2022, while assisting on sets, he collaborated with a Florence-based artist on YUSEF HOURANI IS RIGHT HERE (FOR NOW), a photo series documenting Yusef's alienated return to his hometown of Fremantle following his time at the prestigious Florence Academy of Art. The work was exhibited at the Perth Centre for Photography.

His production credits span some of the state's more prominent recent projects such as RUNT, WE BURY THE DEAD, and THE ENGAGEMENT PARTY. In 2025, he was supported by Screenwest's Documentary Workforce Program, recognising emergent crew talent, and served as the drama and documentary production coordinator for Artemis Media's latest TV series which filmed across Australia and the UK.

Alongside his production work, Baeley has worked for the state agency, Screenwest in multiple successive roles, as Production Attraction & Services Assistant, Funding Team Officer and then Production Attraction Consultant, working to encourage interstate and international film production and investment into Western Australia.

Baeley is a director, creative producer and locations consultant. He works for Clockwork Films WA and holds degrees in Screen Arts and Finance, with a focus on screenwriting, from Curtin University. Baeley is a member of the Screenwest Production Manager accelerator cohort and a contributor to David Compton's business school for creatives.
THE WORK

Baeley’s work is practically split between writing, location scouting and complementary architectural and landscape photography. With the goal of providing useful images to incoming film, tv and creative projects as well as the locations themselves.

The resulting portfolio is a series of expressive, often non-commercial images, of unique spaces in Western Australia.

Baeley’s work has been shown at Perth Centre for Photography as part of the Collective exhibition.
